I'm not from the US, but where I'm from, it is compulsory to go to a driving school to get license, and I'm already deep into my classes already (7 hours of lecture in a classroom, getting my Learning license which is the computer test, and the 5 hour mechanic class thingy where we went through the engines and stuff). You'll still be nervous of course, but in a sense you are "numb" to that nervousness. I'll try my best in my practice for sure. Eventually, you'll have a feeling that you're ready for the test. I've never been to driving school, but I'm definitely sure that they'll teach you better than my dad did (not to diss him, but they have experience with teaching people lol). During June, I practiced parallel parking for two weeks, and scheduled my test for early July. This was spread out though, so I would maybe do a trip one day, but the next trip would be three days later. It took me 20 months of 1-2 hours a week of lessons.
Around 10 2h lessons, but a lot of practising in my own car (with passenger meaning the requirements. Some wont be able to pass after 3 tests etc. Working for a reputable organization is one factor to weigh into your decisionnot the only factor. Some people take to it like a duck to water, for instance my instructor said someone once did it after 8 lessons. Remember, there’s no such thing as a permanent job and no such thing as a safe company. Then, for the rest of May, my dad and I would practice by going out at night to drive and get food from places on a street about 1.5 miles away. Two years after I left a job at a top-20 bank, Lehman went bankrupt (followed by General Motors). I spent the first two weekends driving around in a parking lot with my dad, and then hit the roads around my neighborhood for about three days. I started driving at the beginning of May with a permit. Make sure you can parallel park without hitting the curb, 3 point turns, uphill and downhill parking with turning the steering wheel the right way, merging lanes, stopping, etc.Įven if you do fail the first time, take the test a 2nd time ASAP. My driving instructor (DI) M (35-45ish) was perfectly fine for the first 8 hours. Paid over 1000 up front to a intensive course but due to covid they could only offer me 5/6 hours a week - which is fine. You can practice as much as you want until you feel comfortable enough. I started my driving lessons at the end of April 2021 with a franchise driving school instructor. Paid more money for lessons because it had been awhile and went for it again, this time in a more rural area and I passed. Due to school I wasn't able to take the test for another 4 months.

I finally really needed my drivers license and rushed to complete the test but failed the first time. Most of those hours were spent in a driving school car and I probably paid $400+ for all the in car lessons. I'm 21 (almost 22) and felt the exact same way as you. In total I probably spent 30-40 hours driving over the course of 4 years. I have a few friends in their 30's with kids who don't drive. Please don't feel bad! Better late than never.
